PC makers in the United States needed lowcost, reliable sources of components and peripherals; initially these companies turned to Japan, with its well-developed electronics and computer industries. S. companies also wanted to move labor-intensive production activities to lower-wage locations, and they needed cheap sources of simple components that were becoming too expensive to source from Japan.
