Usually the attribution is based on the observation that the illness in question came on shortly after a loss. Of 182 patients who were relocated in other homes, thirty were dead within three months – a mortality rate ﬁve times greater than expectation. Mortality was highest among those patients whose grasp on reality was most tenuous, particularly among the thirtyeight whom Aldrich rated as ‘psychotic’ before relocation, of whom twenty-four died within a year (Aldrich and Mendkoﬀ, 1963). Apart from a few isolated cases of doubtful authenticity, we have come across no evidence that phenomena such as these are responsible for death following bereavement.
